App Permissions & Notification Settings For Your iQ

This article explains which app permissions the Nextbase iQ app needs, why they matter, and how to manage notification settings so you don’t miss important alerts.

Updated over a week ago

What are app permissions and why are they important?

  • App permissions are requests from an app to use parts of your phone, such as Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, GPS location, camera, and storage.

  • The iQ app relies on these to: connect to your camera, send notifications, stream Live View, upload/download videos, and trigger Emergency SOS correctly.

  • If you refuse key permissions, you will not get full functionality from the iQ app.

Permissions the iQ app asks for

You will be prompted for these during setup. Their usage is:

  • Notifications - Required so your iQ can alert you when an event occurs (for example, a parking incident or motion notification).

  • Camera - Required to scan the setup QR code on your iQ.

  • Bluetooth - Required to help set up and support Emergency SOS and communication with the iQ.

  • Wi‑Fi - Required to view and download videos from the camera to your phone.

  • Nearby Devices (Android) - Required so the iQ can reconnect automatically to your phone.

  • GPS Location - Must be set to “Always On” to use Emergency SOS, so your location can be sent if there is a serious incident.

  • Motion & Fitness Activity (iOS only) - Required for Emergency SOS on iPhone.

  • Local Network (iOS only) - Allows the iQ app to discover and connect to your iQ over the local network/Wi‑Fi.

  • Background App Refresh - Allows the app to connect and reconnect to your iQ in the background.

  • Files and Media (Android only) - Required if you want to download video files from the iQ app into your phone’s gallery.

  • Mobile Data - Required when Wi‑Fi is not available so the app can access the internet and cloud services.

  • Optimise Battery Usage (Android only) - Recommended to be turned off for the iQ app to prevent it being closed in the background.

  • Manage app if unused (Android only) - Recommended to be turned off so Android does not automatically remove permissions if you don’t open the app for a while.

You can review or change these any time from your phone’s system Settings → Apps → Nextbase iQ → Permissions.

Notification Centre in the iQ app

The Notification Centre lets you control how and when your iQ notifies you about events and promotions.

How to open Notification Centre:

  1. Open the iQ app.

  2. Tap More on the bottom‑right of the home screen.

  3. Select Notification Centre.

Managing event alerts and push notifications

  • On the Notification Centre main screen you can turn push notifications on or off.

  • It is strongly recommended to keep push notifications ON, otherwise your phone will not receive real‑time alerts from your iQ.

  • Tap Event Alerts to manage which types of events will send you notifications (for example, parking events or motion alerts).

Managing promotions and email preferences

  • In Notification Centre, tap Promotions.

  • From there you can choose whether to receive promotional push notifications and marketing emails from Nextbase.

If you notice that alerts stop appearing, check both the Notification Centre in the iQ app and your phone’s system notification and permission settings to make sure nothing has been disabled accidentally.
