Understanding File Names & Storage On Your iQ

This article explains where your iQ stores video files, which clips are uploaded to Nextbase Cloud, and how to read the file names so you can see when and how each video was recorded.

Updated over a week ago

Where your iQ saves videos

  • All videos are stored on the Micro SD card inside your iQ.

  • To view the highest‑quality recordings, remove the Micro SD card from the camera and insert it into a computer using an SD card adapter.

  • Files are stored in the DCIM folder on the SD card.

Which videos go to Nextbase Cloud?

  • All clips in the 'Events' section of the History tab in the app are automatically uploaded to Nextbase Cloud.

  • A file becomes an Event when any of the following happens:

    • The iQ detects an impact.

    • Smart Sense Parking Mode is triggered by radar and the G‑sensor.

    • You press the Protect button on the bottom of your iQ.

  • Automatic cloud upload only works if you have a Protect or Protect Plus subscription.

Uploading other videos to the Cloud

You can also upload non‑event videos:

  1. Go to the Library section of the iQ app.

  2. Select a file to view; opening it will trigger an upload to Nextbase Cloud so you can watch it remotely.

  3. You cannot upload files that were not created by your iQ.

How to read iQ file names on the SD card

Each file in the DCIM folder follows the same naming format so you can see when it was recorded and what type of file it is.

Example filename: 231011_175029_199_FH_RADR

How many files does each recording create?

  • For each recording segment, your iQ creates a high‑ and low‑resolution file for each active camera.

  • With a front, cabin, and rear camera, this means up to 6 files every 30 seconds.

  • The two‑letter code after the time and file number shows the camera and quality

FL

CH

What are Events?

Events are files that your iQ has marked as important; the table shown below explains what all these file names mean .e.g. "231011_175029_199_FH_RADR". The majority of Event files are protected which will prevent them from being overwritten by newer recordings.

Event Type

Description

PROT

Manual protection, caused by pressing the protect button.

IPCT

Accelerometer Protection Event (g-sensor).

CRSH

Crash Protection Event. An impact large enough to be considered a crash.

MOVE

RADR

Radar Recording (Not Protected)

For example, 231011_175029_199_FH_CRSH is a front, high‑resolution crash event recorded on 11 Oct 2023 at 17:50:29
