How are my Dash Cam file names formatted?
When you view recordings from your Series 2 Dash Cam on a PC, each file name includes the date, time, camera direction, and recording quality. This makes it easier to quickly find the exact clip you need without opening every file.
A typical file name looks like:
YYMMDD_hhmmss_XXX_CQ.MP4
Breakdown:
YY – Year (last two digits)
MM – Month (01–12)
DD – Day (01–31)
hh – Hour (24‑hour format)
mm – Minute (00–59)
ss – Second (00–59)
XXX – File number (incremental counter)
C – Camera (F = Front, R = Rear)
Q – Quality (H = High, L = Low)
How do I read an example file name?
Take this example:
240915_143027_001_FH.MP4
This means:
24→ Recorded in 202409→ September15→ 15th day of the month14:30:27→ Recording started at 2:30:27 PM (24‑hour time 14:30:27)001→ First file recorded at that timeF→ Front cameraH→ High‑quality recording
By reading the file name, you can quickly confirm when and where in the drive this clip was created, and which camera captured it.
What hidden metadata is stored in my recordings?
Alongside the visible file name, each video file also contains extra data (metadata), such as:
GPS data – The route and exact location of the recording.
G‑sensor data – Details of impacts or sudden movements detected during the clip.
File protection status – Whether the file is marked as protected from being overwritten.
You can view this metadata in MyNextbase Player (Windows/Mac), which lets you:
Track your route on a map.
Check for impact events.
Confirm if an important file has been protected.
Extra tips
Keep the original file names when saving copies so the date, time, and camera details remain clear.
After an incident, make a note of the relevant file names to find them easily later.
Regularly check a sample of files on your PC to confirm names and metadata are being recorded as expected.
Troubleshooting
If file names do not follow the expected pattern, check that your Dash Cam date and time are set correctly.
If GPS or G‑sensor data does not appear in MyNextbase Player, make sure those features are enabled on your Dash Cam.
If files cannot be opened, safely copy them again from the SD card and confirm the
.MP4extension has not been changed.
