What does “format SD card” mean?

  • Formatting an SD card removes all files from the card.

  • It also refreshes the recording structure so your Dash Cam can save new recordings reliably.

  • You should always copy any important clips you want to keep before formatting, because this process cannot be undone.

Do I need to format my SD card?

Yes, regular formatting is very important.

  • Dash Cams record in a continuous loop, which puts extra stress on the SD card.

  • For most drivers, we recommend formatting the SD card every 2–3 weeks.

  • If you do a lot of driving (for example, taxi or delivery drivers), you should format the SD card more often, such as once a week.

How do I format my SD card?

  1. Select more on the bottom right of the app and then click on "SD card management"

  2. The below screen will show the storage data, in this scenario it is empty.

  3. You will be prompted to confirm the format, all files will be removed

What will happen if I don't format my SD card?

If you fail to format your SD card for a prolonged period you could experience the following types of issues:

  • SD card error messages

  • Recording failure

  • Automatic recording failure

  • Device freezing

  • Gaps between recordings

  • Corrupted or unplayable files

  • Failure to start-up and shutdown

Even though these issues are far more common with non-Nextbase branded SD cards, we strongly recommend formatting our SD cards frequently too with regular use of your iQ.

Troubleshooting

If you still see SD card errors after formatting:

  • Make sure you are using a high‑endurance SD card that is suitable for Dash Cam use, we only recommend Nextbase SD Cards.

  • Try formatting the card again, or format it on a computer following the guidance in our SD card formatting articles.

  • If problems continue, try another compatible SD card.
