How can I troubleshoot low battery warnings and power issues with my Nextbase dashcam?

How to Troubleshoot Low Battery Warnings and Power Issues with Your Nextbase Dashcam

Nextbase dashcams are designed to provide reliable performance, but users may occasionally encounter low battery warnings or power-related issues. These problems often stem from improper hardwiring, Parking Mode settings, or internal battery health. This guide outlines common causes and solutions to help you resolve these issues.

Overview of Common Power Issues

Low battery warnings and power issues with Nextbase dashcams typically occur due to:

  • Improper hardwiring: The dashcam is connected to a switched-live circuit instead of a permanent-live circuit.

  • Parking Mode settings: Parking Mode requires constant power to function correctly.

  • Internal battery health: The dashcam’s internal battery may no longer hold a charge.

Parking Mode and Power Supply Requirements

Parking Mode is a feature that allows your dashcam to record events even when your vehicle is turned off. However, it requires a constant power supply to function properly. If your dashcam is hardwired to a switched-live circuit (which provides power only when the ignition is on), the camera will rely on its small internal battery when the car is off. This can lead to low battery warnings and shutdowns.

Solutions:

  1. Disable Parking Mode: If you don’t need Parking Mode, turning it off will prevent the dashcam from relying on its internal battery when the car is off.

  2. Rewire to a Permanent-Live Circuit: If you want to use Parking Mode, ask your installer to connect the hardwire kit to a permanent-live fuse. This ensures the dashcam receives constant power, even when the car is off.

Troubleshooting Internal Battery Health

If your dashcam shuts off immediately after being unplugged from the power source, the internal battery may no longer hold a charge. This is a common issue with older units.

Hardwire Kit Installation and Configuration

The Nextbase Hardwire Kit is designed to provide a constant power supply to your dashcam. However, it includes a voltage cutoff feature (around 11.6V) to protect your vehicle’s battery. If the vehicle’s voltage drops below this threshold, the external power to the dashcam is cut, and the camera may rely on its internal battery, triggering low-battery warnings.

Recommendations:

  • Ensure the hardwire kit is connected to a permanent-live fuse to provide constant power for Parking Mode.

  • If you experience low-battery warnings despite proper hardwiring, test the internal battery health.
