Do Nextbase Dash Cams have night vision?
Nextbase front and rear cameras use visible light, not infrared light like night vision goggles. They are designed to capture moving objects and important details using available light from headlights, streetlights, and surroundings.
Infrared light is not well suited for capturing flat reflective details such as road signs or licence plates, which is why it is not used for exterior recording. However, iQ models include an infrared cabin camera that records the inside of your vehicle even in very low light.
Do Dash Cam settings affect night image quality?
Yes, your resolution and frame rate settings can affect image quality in low light. Higher resolutions capture more detail, while certain frame rate choices can impact brightness and clarity.
For the best balance of detail and performance, choose one of the recommended resolution and frame rate combinations in your Dash Cam menu. You can also refer to our article on resolution and frame rates for more guidance.
Limitations of recording in the dark
Nextbase Dash Cams use optical image sensors similar to your eyes. In complete darkness with no headlights, street lighting, or other light sources, the camera cannot capture clear detail.
The same limitation applies to a smartphone camera taking a photo in a completely dark room without flash. While Dash Cams do not need very bright conditions, a brighter environment will generally produce a sharper and more detailed image.
Extra tips
Make sure your windscreen is clean inside and out to reduce glare from headlights and streetlights.
Avoid pointing the camera too high towards the sky; angle it so the road fills most of the frame.
Use the recommended resolution and frame rate for night driving, rather than experimental or extreme settings.
Check sample night footage in the app and fine‑tune the camera position before long journeys.
